Bear Icebox Communications is a Chicago-based strategic communications agency that has recently joined IPREX, the global communications network. Founded in 2016, Bear Icebox specializes in external communications, media relations, and thought leadership for organizations looking to inspire action and build meaningful connections. With a team rooted in journalism and Fortune 500 corporate communications experience, the agency helps clients navigate complex narratives and expand into new markets—both domestically and internationally.

How did Bear Icebox Communications come to life? What’s the short story of how it all started?

Bear Icebox began with an idea rooted in innovation. More than a decade ago, before tools like ChatGPT existed, our founders were sketching out ways technology could help companies tell better stories — even something as simple as using early AI concepts to support press release writing. 

That product never made it to market, but the mindset stuck.

We officially launched Bear Icebox in 2016 with a clear purpose: to be a strategic communications partner that blends creativity, editorial instincts, and business impact.

I came in with a background in journalism, having worked at places like The Chicago Tribune and The Washington Post. My co-founders brought experience from Fortune 500 corporate communications and newspaper editing. That mix gave us a unique perspective from day one — and it still shapes how we serve clients today.

Q: What’s important to you in the way you work with clients and with each other?

Bob Spoerl: Collaboration is everything.

In today’s world of constant accessibility, meaningful connection doesn’t happen by accident, you must build it intentionally. We believe the best client relationships come from true partnership: consistent communication, shared brainstorming, and a team that feels fully invested in the outcome. 

Our goal is for clients to feel they’re getting more than deliverables. They’re getting a full team behind them. People who bring energy, perspective, and confidence to every interaction.

Q: In what ways would you like IPREX and other partners to collaborate with your agency?

Bob Spoerl:
We value referrals and partnerships deeply. 

What excites me most about IPREX is the ability to solve bigger problems together. We’ve worked on global projects since our earliest days, including one of our first clients coming from the Nordic region when we were still a small, unknown agency in Chicago.

There’s something powerful about helping companies expand into new markets, connect across cultures, and grow internationally. IPREX allows us to offer that kind of reach.

Our Work in Action

Q: Is there a recent project you’re particularly proud of?

Bob Spoerl:
One great example is our work with CADDi, a procurement technology company based in Japan that came to us with very little visibility in the U.S. market.

Within weeks, we helped secure a feature in the Chicago Business Journal, where CADDi was named one of the top business stories of the year after selecting Chicago for its U.S. headquarters. Governor J.B. Pritzker even welcomed them publicly.

From there, the momentum continued — recognition from Fast Company as a Most Innovative Company, multiple tier-one media placements, and growing buzz as the company raised additional funding rounds.

For us, that’s the work we love most: helping companies that are thriving globally build awareness, credibility, and energy in the U.S. 


Looking Ahead

Q: What’s one thing you’re excited about for Bear Icebox in the next year or two?

Bob Spoerl:
This year marks our 10th anniversary, and what’s most compelling is not just growth in size but growth in efficiency, enthusiasm, and impact. 

The communications world is evolving quickly, especially with the explosion of AI tools and new platforms. A great agency isn’t chasing trends; it’s having a team that grows together, speaks in unison, and shows up confidently. 

I’m especially focused on ensuring our team has the tools, resources, and leadership to be exactly what our clients need in the moment — trusted advisors who help them succeed as their businesses evolve.
